U.S. Food Donations to Burkina Faso

Following a USAID Office of Disaster Assistance (OFDA) analysis of nutritional needs in Burkina Faso, the United States has made two important donations of food totaling FCFA 1,440,856,000 (USD 3,112,000) so far in 2007. These donations to Burkina Faso were made through the United Nations’ World Food Program (WFP). The first donation, valued at FCFA 923,685,000 (USD 1,995,000), was made in January and was comprised of 2,000 metric tons (MT) of Corn Soya Blend (CSB) and 500 Mt of vitamin A enriched Vegetable Oil.  The second donation, valued at FCFA 517,171,000 (USD 1,117,000), was made in September and was comprised of 890 Mt of CSB and 230 Mt of vitamin A enriched Vegetable Oil.

The two donations will allow WFP to assist about 65,000 children under the age of three and 56,000 pregnant women and lactating mothers affected by moderate forms of undernutrition.

These donations have made the United States the main donor of the WFP operation launched in January 2007 to address growing undernutrition in Burkina Faso.  Through its overall operation, the WFP aims to assist 668,500 undernourished children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers over a two-year period.
