Regional English Fellow and ALC train 38 English teachers in Ouagadougou
On October 13, 15, and 16, 2009 the American Language Center (ALC) of the US Embassy in Ouagadougou organized workshops for secondary school English teachers with Regional English Fellow Susan Strand.
During the week, Ms Strand and ALC Director Lynn Hanson Ouédraogo visited Lycée Marien N’Gouabi, Lycée Philippe Zinda Kaboré, and Lycée de la Jeunesse for half-day workshops. The training focused on integrating language skills with training materials taken from the State Department resource, Shaping the Way We Teach English. These workshops taught teachers types of activities they can use to help students combine the four main language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening for improved communication in English. Teachers were also encouraged to reflect on their own teaching styles and how they could adapt the techniques shown to their own classroom realities. Participants were given the latest three editions of English Teaching Forum magazine.
These workshops provided great opportunities for Burkinabe teachers and American counterparts to share and exchange. These workshops represent US commitment to improve the quality of English instruction in Burkina Faso, understanding that improved English proficiency is also an investment in the country’s economic development.
