Expert speaks on the Role of Media in conflict resolution

From December 9th-14th, the Public Affairs section of the American Embassy of Ouagadougou welcomed expert Mr. George Newman.  During his stay in Ouagadougou, Mr. Newman held several programs with university students from the communication department; he also spoke to future government employees, journalists, as well as inspiring student journalists. 


His first activity was held at the ‘Ecole Nationale d’Administration et de Magistrature du Burkina Faso.  A conference was held on the role of media in conflict resolution and code of ethics.  The following program was held at the University of Ouagadougou with students of the communication department.  There were 50 participants at this conference.


In the morning of December 12th; a conference was held at the American Cultural Center with the Burkinabé journalist association.  The theme was on the Role of Media in conflict resolution, which interested participants.  Several questions were raised, particularly on the role journalists should play in conflict situations.  In the afternoon, a conference was held at the technical institute of science and communications where over 50 students were eager to listen and discuss the theme presented.  Students were very inquisitive and asked very relevant questions, specifically on the role of African journalists in covering news on the current situation in Sudan, Ivory Coast and other unstable African countries.
