Rains and Flooding in Ouagadougou

September 1, 2009

The U.S. Embassy is issuing this Warden Message to alert U.S. citizens in Burkina Faso to the heavy rains and flooding currently affecting Ouagadougou.  Until the rains and waters have subsided, U.S. citizens in Ouagadougou are encouraged to avoid all unnecessary travel, and those outside the city should avoid travel to the capital.

Rains that began the evening of the August 31st have continued throughout the day, affecting transportation and infrastructure around the capital city.  Rains are forecast to continue into the evening of September 1st. The Embassy has received reports of many flooded roads, washed-out bridges, broken dams, and damaged buildings. Roads conditions are unsafe.  Power outages are currently widespread, and phone service is  unreliable.
