American Language Center Hosts Earth Day 2008 Poster Contest Award Ceremony

May 27, 2008

In honor of Earth Day 2008 the American Language Center (ALC) organized a poster contest for secondary school English clubs. Each club was asked to design and submit a poster in English addressing a local or national environmental problem. During the week of April 22 (Earth Day), 18 clubs from around the country submitted posters for competition. All posters were exhibited in the American Cultural Center conference room for public viewing.

On May 27, 2008 the ALC hosted a ceremony to award the poster contest winners. Ambassador Jackson was on hand to congratulate the students and exhort them to continue in their efforts to learn English and to protect the environment. English clubs whose posters placed first, second, and third received cash awards and Earth Day 2008 posters. Three additional schools received honorable mention and cash prizes. The remaining 12 English clubs received certificates of participation and English learning materials. Through this program, the American Language Center and the American Embassy in Ouagadougou reinforced U.S. support for environmental awareness among the youth of Burkina Faso. This program also demonstrated American commitment to protecting the environment and promoting the use of English as a global language through critical content.

The ALC is in discussions with the Ministry of Environment on a joint project to reproduce the winning poster for nationwide distribution in secondary schools as part of an environmental awareness campaign at the beginning of academic year 2008/2009.
