Online Registration

The State Department maintains  a secure online travel registration website which will allow you, as an American citizen, to record foreign trip and residence information that the Department of State can use to communicate with you and assist you in case of an emergency.

U.S. citizens around the world who travel or reside abroad can access this site either through a link on http://travel.state.gov or directly at https://travelregistration.state.gov.  We invite you to register yourself and your family and get acquainted with travel registration.  If you are already registered with this Embassy/Consulate, please re-register on line to update your records.

The new Internet travel registration service for American citizens allows you to register and update your contact information on the Internet at any time, making it easier for you to keep your information current. The site also provides you with up-to-date travel information customized to your unique travel agenda and itinerary. The data you provide is secured behind Department of State firewalls, accessed only by cleared personnel in Embassies, Consulates, and the Department of State, and releasable only under the provisions of the Privacy Act*.

But why register?” you ask?  “Why do I want the State Department to know where I am?”

Good question.  And there are many good answers.  As mentioned above, if you are registered, in the event of an emergency, the Embassy would be more able to provide you with assistance.  But, perhaps more simply—and perhaps of the greatest utility for U.S. Citizens in Burkina Faso—for a few-minute investment in the online registration process, you will be tapped into the Department’s periodic email updates on safety, security, and other events in Burkina Faso.

For questions about the travel registration system in general, please contact CAIbrs@state.gov.  For other inquiries related to consular services, please contact ConsularOuaga@state.gov.

*Note on the Privacy Act - The Privacy Act, which is designed to protect the privacy and rights of all Americans, occasionally complicates our efforts to assist U.S. citizens in Burkina Faso. As a general rule, we may not reveal information regarding an individual American's location, welfare, intentions or problems to anyone, including family members and Congressional representatives, without the expressed consent of that individual. We strongly urge all Americans to complete the Privacy Act Waiver when registering online or at the Embassy.
