Jazz à Ouaga at the American Cultural Center

April 29, 2007

As part of the 15th edition of the Jazz a Ouaga Festival, the Public Affairs Section and the Jazz a Ouaga Association jointly organized a jazz film show and concert on April 29, 2007 in the garden of the Public Affairs Section. The jazz film featured The Bembeya Jazz, a famous Africa-wide renowned jazz band from Guinea Conakry.

The concert staged Anita Beamon-Freeman, an American Jazz singer from the Embassy and The Sweet Notes, a duo formed by Ambassador Jeanine Jackson (piano) and Mary Henderschott (flute), an American working at the International Linguistics Society in Ouagadougou. These American artists were accompanied in their performance by local musicians.

There was an audience of more than two hundred and thirty (230) people including jazz fans and local and foreign musicians invited to the festival. Jazz is a musical genre that originated from the United States and was exported all over the world. By exposing the local people to jazz, PAS has contributed in raising their interest in American culture and people.
