FAWE Burkina Faso Presents its Profiles of Burkinabe Women Leaders at the American Cultural Center

March 15, 2007

On March 15, 2007, The Forum of African Women Educationalists (FAWE) presented its book Profiles of Burkinabe Women Leaders to an audience of 130 participants at the American Cultural Center.  Profiles was made possible by a PAS grant as part of its efforts to promote Women’s History Month.  The goal of the book project is to improve the performance of girls in the areas of math and science and to keep girls in Burkina Faso in school through high school and beyond.

Ambassador Jackson opened the event and highlighted the importance the United States Government places on education and particularly on girls’ education.  FAWE officially presented the book and took comments from the audience.  The president of FAWE in Burkina Faso also discussed the organization’s goals and urged the audience to mentor girls in order to help keep them in school.  Many students who receive scholarships from the NGO testified in person and encouraged the participants to help FAWE to help them.

Profiles will be distributed to embassies, ministries, high schools, businesses & NGOs. Many participants signed up to mentor a girl in a difficult situation.  FAWE will pair volunteers with girls in need of mentors.  The conference was widely reported in the media
