U.S. Embassy – Ouagadougou
December 29, 2006
According to press reports, ousted Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein will be executed in the coming days by the Government of Iraq after being found guilty of crimes against humanity. Despite this being an Iraqi decision, Saddam’s execution may prompt unrest and anti-American demonstrations in many countries. Historically, Burkina Faso has remained calm in response to international incidents that have sparked violence elsewhere. Nonetheless, we urge Americans to remain alert.
We wish to remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid the area of any demonstrations. American citizens are strongly encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events, and take appropriate steps to bolster their personal security.
For the latest security information, Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department’s Internet website at http://travel.state.gov where the current Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, Travel Warnings, and other Public Announcements can be found.
