International Sacred Music Festival 2008 "Religious Tolerance, factor of peace and social cohesion"
November 23rd 2008 marked the launch for the International Sacred Music Festival in Ouagadougou. This program was initiated at the American Cultural Center on a day marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Special guest speaker, Alimata Traoré, President of the women’s group, ‘Club Zonta,’ delivered opening remarks about the problem in Burkina Faso and the necessity to educate the population about the issue.
The Chorus Association, which organized the Festival, invited several talented artists such as our own Anita Beamon-Freeman, and local singers, Princess, the group Alliance, Negro Spirituals and various choirs and groups of different religious affiliation to participate in the week-long program. Concerts took place at the American Cultural Center and other venues around the city. In addition, a two-day workshop was held at the American Cultural Center for festival participants in order to define sacred music, learn vocal and music techniques, and develop a greater appreciation for choral music.
The Sacred music festival endeavors to allow people of all religious persuasions to come together and express their spiritual belief of a Superior power. It is a time when people connect with one another as one through music to express their admiration to their Superior being. This is the Chorus Associations’ 4th edition, and they have partnered with the American Embassy for three years.
