Bright Schools Handover Ceremony

Millennium Challenge Corporation Vice President John Hewko and Ambassador Jackson formally transferred 132 primary school complexes to MEBA at a ceremony in Katchari-Dori on Oct 30.  To support education of young girls in Burkina Faso, MCC provided $13.1 million for the program called “BRIGHT” (Burkinabe Response to Improve Girls Changes to Succeed).  The program was managed by USAID and carried out by a consortium of NGOs:  Plan International and Catholic Relief Services constructed the schools; FAWE and Tin Tua provided mothers’ training, sensitization and other programs.  Currently, 17,164 children are enrolled in the schools, of which 9,282 are girls.  Mr. Hewko announced that the recently-signed MCC Compact includes $28 million for a second phase of BRIGHT to add more classrooms, teacher lodging and other facilities to the 132 complexes.
