APAC (Association Des Professionnelles Africaines de la Communication) ‘Workshop on Female Circumcision’

On Wednesday June 25th 2008, the Association of Professional Women Communicators organized an all day workshop to discuss Female Genital Mutilation at the American Cultural Center.  Every year, the Cultural Center has opened its doors to APAC for workshops aimed at sensitizing the public on issues pertaining to women’s rights and their role in a democratic society.  This year’s topic aimed to break taboos surrounding female circumcision, a traditional cultural practice that is now outlawed in Burkina Faso.

Several Members of the press, including the local television station (RTB) were present. Mme. Mafarma Sanogo, the former president of APAC, gave opening remarks.  Madame Aminata Ouedraogo/Bagayoko, Technical Advisor at the Culture, Tourism and Communication Ministry, representing the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Communication and Binta C. Mayaki, on behalf of the Cultural Center, also spoke at the conference.

The workshop was followed by the APAC General Assembly and Mrs. Mafarma Sanogo was unanimously re-elected as the new President with new board members.

The workshop was a success for all members of APAC as well as other participants.
