US Embassy launches Access English Microscholarship program for 25 students of Lycée Marien N’Gouabi

On November 20, 2008, Director of the American Cultural Center, Joann Lockard presided over a ceremony in Ouagadougou to launch the Access English Microscholarship program for students of Lycée Marien N’Gouabi.  This is the first public high school in Burkina Faso to participate in the Access program.  Before an assembly of 100 including students, parents, school administrators, and Ministry of Education officials, 25 students from Lycée Marien N’Gouabi received certificates of award to participate in a two-year program of supplementary English classes.  These Access classes will be taught at Lycée Marien N’Gouabi by the US Embassy’s American Language Center.  With this program, the US Embassy reinforces U.S. government support for quality English instruction among Burkinabe youth across religious, ethnic, social, and economic lines.  This program is a major public outreach program to young populations in Burkina Faso.  Participating in the Access English Microscholarship program will better equip these students linguistically and thereby make them more competitive in terms of their future education and professional development.  In addition, they will receive an enriching educational experience which will allow them to learn about American history, society, and culture.
