Reflection on Democracy and State of Right in Burkina Faso

On September 3, 2008, Ambassador Jeanine Jackson spoke to workshop participants during the opening ceremony of a three-day workshop held by the Burkinabe Association for Youth and Civic Education (AJBEC) at the American Cultural Center in Ouagadougou.  The program, which was sponsored by a grant from the U.S. Embassy, was entitled, “Reflection on Democracy and State of Right in Burkina Faso.”  A total of 51 participants from all 13 regions of Burkina Faso used the three-day event to learn about, discuss, and strategize on ways that youth associations in Burkina Faso can participate effectively and responsibly in the democratic process.  Presentations were given by representatives from the Ministries of Human Rights, and Youth and Employment, as well as representatives from local Human Rights NGOs and civil society organizations.  The program promoted civic education for young Burkinabe and helped to promote the U.S. goal of strengthening democracy and human rights in Burkina Faso
